The Bechdel Test and Race in Popular Fiction

crystalsavestheday:

1. It has to have two POC in it.

2. Who talk to each other.

3. About something other than a white person.

No Joss Whedon show passes, neither does Supernatural, or Being Human.

Veronica Mars passes, but doesn’t pass the original Bechdel Test.

Check out a few more here.

As a fan of the original Bechdel Test, I think this is a brilliant idea. It’s pretty eye-opening to see how the stories we tell in pop culture compare to the diversity of the real world. The mainstream needs to diversify! Our culture needs to stop treating stories that focus on POC or women (or insert other marginalized group here) as a niche that only members of those groups will/should be interested in (or as a spectacle for everyone else) and stop treating stories focusing on non-marginalized groups (white people, men, straight people, etc.) as universally relatable. The world has a fuck-ton of variety, and people of ALL different kinds matter. Let’s fucking act like it. Hollywood, I’m looking at you.
